Men at the Sultan Mosque for Solat
Taken by myself
Hello everyone!

Today I am going to tell you more about the preparation and procedures for solat and what constitutes to one raka ‘ah.

It is stated in the Qur’an (Islamic bible) on the importance of solat.
Tell My servants who believe to establish regular salah (Qur’ an 14:31).

Preparation for solat:
A solat is invalid without the following arrangements:
1. One should be free from any ceremonial impurity (major or minor),
2. Wudu must be performed,
3. The place for prayer must be clean,
4. The attire donned must be clean,
5. One must face the direction of the qiblah,
6. One should make the intention, niyyah, for the performance of solat.

Additionally, here are some acts that nullify solat:
1. Breaking of wudu,
2. Talking and purposeful coughing,
3. Doing any 3 distracting acts in succession such as coughing 3 times,
4. Drinking, eating or smoking while in prayers,
5. Turning the chest away from the direction of the Ka’bah/ qiblah,
6. Changing intentions, niyyah,
7. Thinking evil thoughts,
8. The aurah being exposed, which is the part of the body which must be covered.

A raka’ ah, which is one unit of the solat consists of the following:
1. Standing          (Qiyam)
2. Bowing            (Ruku’)
3. Straightening (I’tidal)
4. Prostration     (Sajah)
5. Sitting               (Jalsah)
6. Prostration     (Sajah)

During each posture, prescribed invocations of praise to Allah are recited.
Specifics of the whole solat can be found in this video:

Group Solat

It is advisable to offer solat as a group, even if it is just two people. It can be done with a group of Muslims or at home with the family. Solat can be done anywhere, as long as the prerequisites are met out.

One person, preferably male will lead the group in solat. He is called the imam. The group follows his leads and performs all the postures in unison. The followers should not perform a position before the imam.

Friday Congregational Solat
Zuhr Solat (around 1.15pm) on Fridays is replaced by a congregational prayer. The number of raka’ at is reduced from four to two. There will be a sermon preached before the solat, which is on any topic relevant to the spiritual or material concerns of the Muslims community.

It is compulsory for men to attend the Friday Congregational Solat (Juma ‘ah). Women may join if they wish.

If a Muslim misses the congregational solat on Friday, the normal Zuhr Solat has to be offered after the Juma’ ah is over.

Special Cases

Women who are undergoing menstruation or childbirth need not compensate for the solat they missed. However, they will need to carry out purification acts which will be covered in the next post.

That is all for today! Hopefully you’ve caught on something special from this post.

Take care and until next time.
